Best Cities to Live in (2004)

1. OttawaThe 2004 Quality of Living Survey of Mercer Human Resource Consulting established a ranking with Best Cities to Live in for Expatriate Workers. Five out of first six cities are Canadian, with Ottawa, the national capital, topping the list. It is followed by Vancouver and Calgary.

As expected, countries open to a large number of immigrants (such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand) performed best. From Europe, a special mention for Germany (with five cities in top 20). From US, only Honolulu appears in the list. Ranking is based on a derived index, in which both the quality of living index and the cost of living index have been included.

1. Ottawa

In Ottawa, homes are affordable and household income is high. Numerous doctors are available and many people use to walk to work. Despite the winter’s cold, economy is good and people love living in this city.

2. Vancouver

Surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, Vancouver is renowned for its innovative programs and leading in the areas of sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity.

3. Calgary

Calgary is a great place to visit, live, work and play. The city combines a thriving metropolis with Western roots and friendly small town hospitality. Close to the Rocky Mountains and gorgeous lakes, Calgary already hosted Winter Olympic Games and is now a rich city, due in part to Alberta’s oil sands.
