Best US Places For Business And Careers (2008)
In their 10th annual ranking for 2008 of the Best Places for Business and Careers, Forbes Magazine finds Raleigh of North Carolina as the top city, followed by Boise (Idaho) and Fort Collins (Colorado).
The rankings cover 200 largest metro areas and are based on nine factors. Among the considered factors of the survey, for these business-welcoming metros: low business costs, a solid job growth and an educated labor supply. Six of the 10 metro areas are around capital cities. For a third straight year, the Southeast is home to half of the top 10.
1. Raleigh
Raleigh NC tops the list for a second straight year. The area boasts one of the most educated labor supplies in the country. 38% of the adult population has a college degree and 12% has a graduate degree. Business costs are 14% below the national average.
2. Boise
Boise is the most populous city of the state of Idaho, and its capital. Mountains - known to locals as the Boise foothills and sometimes described as the foothills of the Rocky Mountains - rise up to the northeast, stretching from the far southeastern tip of the Boise city limits to nearby Eagle. Most of the metropolitan area lies on a broad flat plain.
3. Fort Collins
Fort Collins is a newcomer to the top 10 list, one of the smaller places in the same time. Home to the Colorado State University, Fort Collins also benefits from strong income growth and business costs well below other Colorado locales. The university is the largest employer in the area and a big reason why almost half of residents have a college degree. This is the sixth highest rate in the country.
