Best US Places to Raise a Family (2008)
In April 2008, editors of Best Life Magazine used public data from various sources and analyzed 257 American cities, in order to determine the best places to raise a family. Honolulu took the first place, followed by Virginia Beach and Billings (Montana).
If you are a parent, interested in good schools with above-average test scores and favorable student-teacher ratios for your children, if you want to raise your children in a safe area, with family-friendly neighborhoods and respectable budgets, check the list below. A good quality of life is also determined by a large number of museums and parks, and available pediatricians. Multi-hour commutes and expensive houses, as well as divorcing friends and neighbors, are not what you are looking for.
1. Honolulu
It looks like unemployment ranks less than half the national average in Honolulu-Hawaii. You have the choice of a huge number of beaches, and schools spend almost $9,000 per pupil.
2. Virginia Beach
This area is close to the beach, to the mountains, to Washington DC and North Carolina. You have plenty of history and entertainment. Winters are cool, but very rarely will you ever get snow. When it does come, everything shuts down, since no one there knows how to drive in it. Springs are very pleasant, but some years they might turn quickly into summers. And summer is truly beach weather. Fall is absolutely beautiful, especially if you take a weekend to go a few hours inland to the mountains, to see the trees up there.
3. Billings
Billing, the largest city of Montana, is close to Yellowstone National Park. It has a large number of hospitals, universities and tourist attractions for kids.
