Canada’s Most Prosper Places to Live (2008)
According to a May 2008 survey of the Canadian newspaper MoneySense, the area of Ottawa-Gatineau (shared between Ontario and Quebec) tops the most prosper places to live in Canada, followed by the cities of Victoria (in British Columbia) and Fredericton (New Brunswick).
Among most important factors taken into account in this survey: weather, jobs, home prices, crime, availability of doctors, walking or biking to work, air quality. It was not about who has the best scenery, best restaurants or best beaches. The results can be used by people planning to relocate, to invest in real estate or just to compare how their own community ranks against its neighbor cities.
1. Ottawa-Gatineau
How is it possible a city with cold winters and an ordinary nightlife can top this rankings? While Ottawa didn’t finish higher than 19th in any individual category, the city was consistently in the top third of communities, no matter what factor has been examined. This is how the national capital earned the top spot, as the most prosper city in Canada. Ottawa had decent ratings across the full spectrum of the criteria. Homes are affordable and household income is high. Numerous doctors are available and many people use to walk to work.
2. Victoria
While Ottawa wasn’t outstanding in anything, but achieved consistently decent scores on all the measurements, Victoria did things a bit differently. The capital of British Columbia scored low for affordable housing and discretionary income, but very high for its warm weather and lots of doctors.
3. Fredericton
Fredericton, the New Brunswick city, was somehow the opposite of Victoria (ranked second): it scored low on doctors and weather, but extremely high on affordable housing and discretionary income.
