1. Colorado SpringsWith its annual 2006 survey for Best Small US Cities to Live In, CNN/Money Magazine posted also a top 10 of best big US cities. The winner is the city of Colorado Springs (Colorado), followed by Austin (Texas) and Mesa (Arizona).

There are several other rankings, but we will briefly present here only the top three cities of this specific survey. American cities do not usually rank in the top spots in worldwide surveys. Main reason is high criminal rates. This does not mean that life can not be great there. Big job opportunities and clean air, this seems to be some of the criteria these cities have been selected for.

1. Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs lies under the heights of Pikes Peaks. To do the Peak, you can either board the Cog Railway in Manitou Springs, or drive your car up the Pike’s Peak Highway, or walk the Barr Trail all the way to the top. Colorado Springs is a great vacation place, very tourist friendly, with plenty of hotels and motels and many places to eat. Among other touristic attractions, to keep visitors busy, count the Air Force Academy, Seven Falls, Garden of the Gods, the Cave of the Winds, Manitou Springs and the shops of Colorado Avenue.

2. Austin

Austin is a very green city. Capital of Texas and one of the fastest-growing and most vibrant cities in the USA, Austin is also a city with a rich historic past. The original name of the city was Waterloo, chosen because of the abundance of springs and creeks in the area. A river runs through it. Austin has a mild year-round climate. Barton Springs Pool, with constant 68-degree waters, remains the favorite place in town to cool off on a hot summer’s day. Austin prides itself on natural beauty: waterways and pockets of undeveloped land create a unique verdant landscape. Austin is also one of only a handful of US cities with professional ballet, symphony, opera and theater companies.

3. Mesa

With almost half a million people, Mesa has fast become the third largest metropolitan city in the state of Arizona. Mesa is unique among cities in the Phoenix area. The city offers a variety of lifestyle and leisure pursuits, in high demand by visitors and residents alike. The Sonoran Desert is a playground for outdoor recreation and different attractions. Weather is great. Exquisite dining and ample shopping opportunities wait for you to discover this amaizing city from the Southwest.
