Best Big US Cities to Live in (2007)
With its annual 2007 survey for Best Small US Cities to Live In, CNN/Money Magazine posted also an online poll, for big cities. At the time of this article, there have been almost 400,000 user votes and the rankings give winner the city of San Diego (California), followed by Chicago (Illinois) and Phoenix (Arizona).
It is not clear how publishers selected the 10 big cities for this poll, but the results may be relevant enough to get an idea where people think is best to live. American cities do not usually rank in the top spots in worldwide surveys mainly because of some relatively high criminal rates. However, this does not mean that life can not be great there.
1. San Diego
San Diego is California’s second largest city, with 70 miles of beaches, where a gentle Mediterranean climate begs for a day of everything and nothing. San Diego is bordered by Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Laguna Mountains. The city is renowned for its idyllic climate and a dazzling array of world-class family attractions, such as the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, Sea World San Diego and LEGOLAND California.
2. Chicago
Chicago is one of the largest cities in North America (the third-most populous city in the United States) and the largest city in the American Midwest. The city experiences four distinct seasons and lies within the humid continental climate zone. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold, snowy and windy, spring and fall are mild with low humidity. Due to its high level of diversification, Chicago has been rated as having the most balanced economy in the US. The city has the third largest gross metropolitan product in the country.
3. Phoenix
Phoenix is the only state capital with a population of more than a million, the largest state capital in the United States in terms of population and the largest and most populous city in the state of Arizona. Phoenix is surrounded by the McDowell Mountains, the White Tank Mountains, the Superstition Mountains and the Sierra Estrella. The average summer high temperature is among the hottest of any populated area in the US. Phoenix has also an arid climate, with very hot summers and temperate winters.
