Best Small US Cities to Live in (2007)
The annual 2007 survey of Money Magazine, for the best small US cities to live in, places Middleton (Wisconsin) on the top spot, followed by Hanover (New Hampshire) and Louisville (Colorado).
The survey focuses on small American cities, with good schools and safe streets, great economic opportunities and a sense of community, affordable houses or more expensive houses good to live in. The economic boom of these small cities may lead to an increased cost of living over the years, but thing is all could be worth it.
1. Middleton
Middleton, “The Good Neighbor City“, is just a western suburb of Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin, with a small population of less than 20,000. The nationally recognized Parade “Middleton Hills”, of Homes neighborhood based on the principles of New Urbanism, takes place here. Several companies have their headquarters here: Capital Brewery, Springs Window Fashions, American Girl and Electronic Theatre Controls.
2. Hanover
In the Upper Connecticut River Valley, where the river forms the border between Vermont and New Hampshire, is located Hanover. Home of Dartmouth College, of the US Army Corps of Engineers Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, Hanover borders the bigger town of Lebanon. The city is one of the small number of towns that travellers must pass through while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
3. Louisville
Long time ago, Louisville began as a rough mining community, suffered through a period of labor violence and after the mines closed, became a suburban residential community. Home prices are up now, but an old farmhouse near downtown can be had for relatively cheap, and condos can be found for similar prices.
