Best Cities in UK (2003)
UK tourist-oriented magazine Condé Nast Traveller published in 2003 a top with the best cities in the United Kingdom based on the index of satisfaction with travel facilities and services. The top spot was surprisingly taken by Leeds, followed by London and Edinburgh.
Readers of the magazine have been asked to choose the best that the travel world had to offer, everything from hotels and spas to airlines and airports. They rated their choices according to various criteria, such as service and value for money.
1. Leeds
Not necessarily the most beautiful city in the UK, but a fun place to be. Leeds scored relatively low for aesthetics and architecture, but very high for nightlife, entertainment, food and restaurants. It also received the top score for value for money.
2. London
London is a timeless city, offering a fascinating mix of old and new. With prominent sights at every turn, from Big Ben to the London Eye, the National Gallery to the Tate Modern, London has held on to its reputation as one of Europe’s hippest capitals. The city has new landmarks and trendy hotels, restaurants and clubs opening up all the time.
3. Edinburgh
Edinburgh was voted best UK city in the Readers’ Travel Awards 2001, 2002 and 2004. The city took a third place in 2003. Among the cobbled streets and Gothic architecture, you will find in Edinburgh chic modern hotels and trendy restaurants, along with the new Scottish Parliament, that has given the city a newfound dynamism.
