Best US Cities to Have a Baby (2006)
Fit Pregnancy, an American publication obviously dedicated to pregnant women, comes up every year with a “Best Cities in America to Have a Baby” survey. The magazine considered 50 major US cities and factors such as doctors and hospitals, midwives, birth and health risk, stroller-friendly trails and parks, affordability, and (maybe the most important) breastfeeding. The 2006 Fit Pregnancy survey ranked Portland on the top spot, followed by Boston and Minneapolis.
So if you want to start a family or simply intend to have another child, take a look at the rankings below.
1. Portland
Portland is among the top 2 percent of cities in the survey and has the highest number of OB-GYNs. More than a quarter of all of Portland moms breastfeed their babies for 6 months or longer, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Portland has more fertility clinics per capita than average, but there are no state laws that require health insurers to cover fertility treatments, or even to offer such coverage.
2. Boston
Boston received special recognition as the best city for fertility services. Not just Boston, but the entire state of Massachusetts is one of a handful of states that require medical insurance providers to cover fertility treatment, including in vitro fertilization. Boston is home to more fertility doctors and clinics than almost anywhere else.
3. Minneapolis
Minneapolis received special honors as the most affordable city in the survey. Minnesota parents enjoy healthy state income tax breaks for dependents, and state laws require employers to allow parents to use sick leave to care for children. Three out of four Minneapolis families own their own homes.
