Canada’s Best Places to Retire (2008)
The May 2008 survey of Most Prosper Places to Live, of the Canadian newspaper MoneySense, also compiled a derived list of the best Canadian Places to Retire. It is not a surprise here the capital of British Columbia, Victoria, comes on top, followed by Ottawa and Kingston, both from Ontario.
Most important factor has been the good medical care and the number of doctors available. Weather (especially the number of days above freezing) has been also another important criteria. Other factors such as the household income and the discretionary income, or the percentage of new cars on the road and the unemployment rate, have been considered not so important for the retirement.
1. Victoria
Victoria has high air quality and only a few freezing days a year. The city is healthcare attractive and has a large number of doctors. Its working population can walk or bike-in. In terms of housing however, Victoria is an expensive city. But only few of other measured communities are less affordable than Victoria.
2. Ottawa
Different from Victoria, the national capital has a large number of days a year with the temperature dropping below zero. However, the city does possess a decent ratings across the spectrum of other criteria. Ottawa finished consistently in the top of this survey. Doctors are numerous and its population growth is ideal. The city has a low crime rate and homes are affordable.
3. Kingston
Placed between Toronto and Montreal, the city of Kingston had no important weaknesses in any category. in terms of healthcare and number of doctors, Kingston ranked second. Walking and biking to work is popular in this city. Despite cold winters, Kingston’s weather did rank in the top third in the nation, such as its community crime rate. It has a beautiful waterfront and looks like an ideal place to retire.
