City of Adelaide (Australia)
Adelaide is the largest city in South Australia and the capital of this state. It is however smaller than other southeastern Australian big cities, such as Melbourne or Sydney, where demographic expansion was bigger in the last decades. The fifth largest city in Australia, Adelaide has a population of more than 1 million people.
Situated on the Adelaide Plains, on eastern side of Gulf St Vincent, Adelaide is a coastal city, at about 20 km from the coast, rising in the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges.
Adelaide in set in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares. Entirely surrounded by parkland, old days of Adelaide were shaped by religious freedom and a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties. These led to world-first reforms.
Along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street and in various districts of the metropolitan area, you’ll find many governmental and financial institutions. This is the city centre and most stores are concentrated here.
Adelaide is an important commercial centre, not just for South Australia. The city is well-known today for its many festivals as well as for its wine, arts and sports.
From Montefiore Hill rolls an expanse of attractive green parkland, resplendent with rose beds, peppered with trees and dominated by the ivy-clad Adelaide Oval.
