City of Vancouver (BC, Canada)
Vancouver is a great coastal city, major seaport close to the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Captain George Vancouver was a British explorer and this is where the name of the city comes from.
Population in metropolitan area was over 2 million people in 2007, but it is growing fast, especially with a large number of Asian immigrants who chose Canada as their new homeland. Vancouver developed from a small lumber mill town into a metropolitan centre following the arrival of the transcontinental railway.
After the completion of the Panama Canal, the Port of Vancouver - the busiest seaport in Canada today - became internationally significant.
The economy of Vancouver relies on forestry, mining, fishing and agriculture, but it diversified over time, with the service industry, tourism, high-tech and film production.
Vancouver is consistently ranked one of the top three most livable cities in the world, several times even “the” best city for its quality of living and natural beauty. The 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler.
Weather is milder than anywhere else in Canada, but sometimes it may rain a lot, especially during the winter. However, there are not many cities in the world where you can go sailing during the day, and than go on the mountain to the ski, in the evening.
