Most Populated Agglomerations of Canada
Metropolitan areas of Toronto (Ontario), Montreal (Quebec) and Vancouver (British Columbia) top the rankings of most populated urban agglomerations of Canada. Just looking at the map, it’s easy to remark the huge density of other highly populated areas in the South-Eastern Ontario, a well-developed economical and industrial corner between the Great Lakes.
The list continues with other major cities of Canada, such as Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec City and Winnipeg.
1. Toronto
With over 5 million people, Toronto is by far the most populated metropolitan area in Canada. Relatively close to the American border, to the industrial area of Detroit, to other densely populated areas such as Hamilton, London or Kitchener, Toronto GTA (Greater Toronto Area) is also the 8th largest metropolitan area in North America.
2. Montreal
Montreal was once a rival to Toronto, but due to its bilingual laws and the recent referendums on potential separation from the rest of Canada, many immigrants chose to rather install or move to Toronto or Vancouver. The French culture of this Canadian metropolis remains however a magnet for those who like cultural diversity.
3. Vancouver
Many people move to Vancouver especially because of its natural beauty and the mild weather, when compared to the rest of Canada. Vancouver also receives a huge number of Asian immigrants, who formed in suburbs like Richmond or Surrey new highly populated areas.
Here are the top 100 most populated agglomerations of Canada, with data from the 2006 Canadian Census:
