Most Populated Cities of Australia
The top 50 of most populated cities of Australia does not show notable positional changes on top when compared to the Most Populated Agglomerations of Canada rankings. We can remark of course the larger population living in suburbs around Sydney, when compared especially to Melbourne.
Australian Bureau of Statistics defines as “urban centres” population clusters of 1,000 or more people. The figures below represent the populations of the contiguous built-up areas of each city. Data is according to the 2006 Australian Census.
1. Sydney
Australia’s most expensive city and one of the most expensive cities in the world, Sydney maintains however its role as a major destination for immigrants to Australia. The city is one of the most multicultural cities in the world.
2. Melbourne
Melbourne is today Australia’s sporting and cultural capital, a major centre of commerce, industry and cultural activity. It is home to many sporting events and institutions.
3. Brisbane
Brisbane is one of the major business hubs in the country and has the fourth highest median household income of the Australian capital cities. Brisbane recorded the largest growth rate of all capital cities in the 2006 Census, with an annual growth rate of 2.2%.
