1. AtlantaForbes Magazine ranked 30 American cities based on the percentage of Internet users with high-speed access, the range of service providers within a city and the availability of public wireless hot spots. The 2006 survey for Most Wired Cities in the United States awarded Atlanta (Georgia) with the top spot, followed by Orlando (Florida) and Seattle (Washington).

Forbes started with the top markets in broadband adoption as determined by Internet market research firm Nielsen/NetRatings. They dropped cities that didn’t crack the U.S. Census Bureau’s top 100 list. They calculated service provider variety with the latest available statistics, and determined Wi-Fi hot spots per capita by public hot spot directory JiWire and population estimates.

1. Atlanta

More than 80% of Atlanta’s home Internet users accessed the Web via a high-speed connection. Atlanta ranked highest in broadband access options, third in Wi-Fi access points and ninth in broadband adoption. This city beat several cities more closely associated with the Web, like San Francisco, Seattle and New York.

2. Orlando

Orlando comes as a surprise on the second place, because the city is associated more with Disney than with downloads.

3. Seattle

Seattle ranked third overall and in terms of broadband adoption (the percentage of home Internet users with high-speed connections). It ranked forth for the public wireless Internet hotspots per capita (Wi-Fi hotspots). For access options (the number of companies providing high-speed Internet access), Seattle was not so good, coming on 11th place.
