World’s Best Cities (2008)
The 2008 World’s Best Award of Travel+Leisure Magazine for World’s Best City went to Bangkok, followed by Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Cape Town (South Africa).
A questionnaire was made available online to subscribers. Respondents were required to rate hotels, islands, airlines, destination spas, and rental-car agencies. In another category, they were required to rate cities, cruise lines, tour operators and safari outfitters. Finally, a third category concerned the hotel spas. The scores were indexed averages of responses concerning applicable characteristics.
1. Bangkok
The SkyTrain is certainly a part of the lifestyle of Bangkok, which appears as a jumble of oxidized hovels, clotheslines, and satellite dishes, above which gathers a typically ruined Third World sky, while in the far and middle distances, a new postmodern cityscape of luxurious condominiums has seemingly been airlifted from Miami’s Brickell Avenue.
2. Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is a complex, energetic, and seductive port city, which stretches south-to-north along the Rio de la Plata. Portenos are intensely involved in the life and culture of their city, and they will gladly share the secrets of Buenos Aires if you lend an ear and relate your own stories in return.
3. Cape Town
Awarded the World Travel Award for Best Destination in Africa, Cape Town and the Western Cape leads as Africa’s Business, Conventions and Investment hub. Situated on the southwestern tip of Africa, Cape Town and the Western Cape is recognized as one of the most beautiful places on earth, with a range of attractions, breathtaking sights and endless activities. It is a year-round holiday destination with friendly people, a mild climate and rich cultural heritage.
