Worst of Melbourne (Australia)
There is some kind of rivalry between people from Melbourne and Syndey, maybe because both cities experienced a huge economic boom and immigration these last couple of years.
Someone said Melbournians have no pride in their communities and neighborhoods. Because of the shocking amount of litter, graffiti, vandalism, and run down businesses. Some may be also surprised to see people going barefoot at the supermarket, in the mall and even at the airport.
Some bad areas (where you may get robbed): Broadmeadows, Frankston, Dandenong, Footscray, Noble Park or Flemington. Or Swanston Street (the main street!) and the junkies in video arcades on Russell Street. Most people try not to bring them up in any conversation. The multiculture in Melbourne comes also with the price of too much violence, by some ethic gangs. One minute you are in China, next in Turkey, then Lebanon, then Sudan, then Greece, afterwards just arrived in England, then Italy, then Vietnam… All the above happens in about 45 minutes driving around Melbourne.
The suburbs look sometimes as a depressing sea of grafitti. Vandalism and identical run down red brick houses. And none of these are “world class”: the museum, the Crown, the Royal Botannic Gardens.
It may also be shocking for outsiders when people park their cars on their front yards, making the neighborhood look so trashy. Some neighborhoods in Melbourne (Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne, Dandenong, Chelsea, Frankston, Pakenham, Oakleigh) may look ugly partly because there are so many cars parked on people’s yards.
