Best Cities for Diplomats (2008)
Based on the city’s number of embassies, consulates, local organizations with international reach, headquarters of international organizations, and political conferences held in the cities, the World’s Most Global Cities survey, presented by Foreign Policy Magazine, A.T. Kearney and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, finds Washington D.C. (United States) is the city where you may have your best carrier as a diplomat.
It is logically followed by New York - where the headquarters of the United Nations are located - and Brussels (Belgium) - the headquarters of the European Union.
1. Washington D.C.
The capital of the United States, arguably the most powerful country in the world, is an epicenter for diplomacy and political activity. From the White House to Capitol Hill, Washington District of Columbia lives and breathes through politics.
2. New York
New York hosts one of the headquarters of the United Nations (the other one is in Geneva, Switzerland). Combine this with the economical power and the cultural diversity of this city, and you get a world center for politics you should not omit.
3. Brussels
All member countries of the European Union send their elected deputies here. Brussels became for the EU what New York or Geneva are for the United Nations.
Here is the list of best cities in the world for Diplomats, based on the political engagement:
