Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo, a small castle town in the 16th century, and became Japan’s political center when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. Tokyo today is Japan’s largest city and the country’s capital. The metropolis consists of several city wards, cities, towns and villages, the Izu and Ogasawara Islands, and several small Pacific Islands in the south of Japan’s main island Honshu.
