1. ChicagoIn 2005, DogFriendly.com found Chicago as the most dog-friendly North American city. This is the best city to visit if you have a dog. Chicago (Illinois) is followed by Vancouver (Canada, British Columbia) and Boston (Massachusetts).

The survey looked at the quality dog-friendly places, number of hotels that welcome well-behaved dogs, the way dogs are welcome on public transportation, and reasonably regulations for well-behaved and leashed dogs in public places. The ninth-placed Toronto (Canada, Ontario) was later disqualified because of a newly adopted Ontario province law affecting visitors and residents with dogs.

1. Chicago (United States)

Chicago has most things to do for visitors with dogs, from upscale hotels that welcome dogs to boat tours on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. However, dogs are still not allowed on the public transit system.

2. Vancouver (Canada)

Only small dogs in carriers are allowed on Translink (the main public transportation), the ferry, the train and bus system, but Vancouver has a lot to offer for visitors with dogs. A negative note: the Vancouver to Alaska Ferry System only allows dogs in the cars, where people are not allowed.

3. Boston (United States)

Boston is one of the easiest cities to get around for people vacationing with dogs. In Boston, the public trains and subway cars allow well-behaved, leashed dogs of all sizes to tag along. The city has plenty of parks, such as Boston Common, the Arnold Arboretum and Back Bay Fens, where you and your dog can escape from the busy downtown.

So here are the most dog-friendly cities from Canada and the United States, in 2005:
