Best US Academic Institutions to Work For (2008)
According to The Scientist Magazine, UCSF’s J. David Gladstone Institutes is the best US academic institution to work for in 2008. The San Francisco university is immediately followed by Princeton University and the Trudeau Institute.
Some researchers are already feeling the pinch, with budget crises looming at many institutions. But thankfully, a few organizations are finding interim funding solutions. For many scientists, feeling good about their workplace isn’t only about funding and support, but it’s also about giving back to the community.
1. J. David Gladstone Institutes
Gladstone is composed of three medical institutes: the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, which focuses on atherosclerosis; the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, established to study HIV, and the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease. The work of the scientific staff at all three institutes extends beyond the laboratory to the wider community. The mission of the institutes includes the education of graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists.
2. Princeton University
Princeton provides students with academic, extracurricular and other resources, that help them achieve at the highest scholarly levels and prepare them for positions of leadership and lives of service in many fields of human endeavor.
3. Trudeau Institute
The Trudeau Institute was originally founded as a tuberculosis treatment and research facility. The Institute was later rededicated as an independent nonprofit organization committed to world-class medical research.
