1. LeedsUK tourist-oriented magazine Condé Nast Traveller published in 2003 a top with the best cities in the United Kingdom based on the index of satisfaction with travel facilities and services. The top spot was surprisingly taken by Leeds, followed by London and Edinburgh.

Readers of the magazine have been asked to choose the best that the travel world had to offer, everything from hotels and spas to airlines and airports. They rated their choices according to various criteria, such as service and value for money. Continue reading »

America’s Smartest Cities (2006)

SeattleAn analysis of US Census Bureau data, performed by BizJournals in 2006, reached the conclusion Seattle (Washington) is America’s Smartest City, followed by San Francisco (California) and Austin (Texas). The rankings reflect each community’s collective brainpower, which is tied to its residents’ abilities to innovate, create, compete, and make money.

Communities were ranked in population categories, to reward cities with heavy concentrations of college graduates. The analysis looked at the educational levels of adults in thousands of US cities, towns, villages, boroughs and unincorporated areas. Continue reading »

Best US Cities to Have a Baby (2008)

1. PortlandIn the 2008 “Best Cities in America to Have a Baby” survey of the Fit Pregnancy magazine, Portland (Oregon) moves back on the top spot, after missing one year  from the top 3. It is followed by the always present San Francisco and Minneapolis. The winner of last year’s survey, Boston (Massachusetts), moves on the sixth place.

The survey looked at different criteria, such as doctors, hospitals, doulas, midwives, breastfeeding success rates, birth and health risk, stroller-friendly trails and parks, and affordability. Best US Cities to Have a Baby (2007)

BostonFit Pregnancy magazine compiled again data for the 50 US cities with the largest population, for its 2007 “Best Cities in America to Have a Baby” survey. 47 weighted categories, selected by a panel of experts, have been analyzed, using the most recent information available from government agencies, private foundations, professional associations and public databases. The 2007 Fit Pregnancy survey ranked Boston on the top spot, followed by San Francisco and Minneapolis. The winner of the 2006 survey, Portland, moved on the fourth place.

1. PortlandFit Pregnancy, an American publication obviously dedicated to pregnant women, comes up every year with a “Best Cities in America to Have a Baby” survey. The magazine considered 50 major US cities and factors such as doctors and hospitals, midwives, birth and health risk, stroller-friendly trails and parks, affordability, and (maybe the most important) breastfeeding. The 2006 Fit Pregnancy survey ranked Portland on the top spot, followed by Boston and Minneapolis.
