Based on the city’s number of embassies, consulates, local organizations with international reach, headquarters of international organizations, and political conferences held in the cities, the World’s Most Global Cities survey, presented by Foreign Policy Magazine, A.T. Kearney and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, finds Washington D.C. (United States) is the city where you may have your best carrier as a diplomat.

Based on the number of Fortune global 500 firms with headquarters in the cities, on whether or not top 40 global service firms have offices there, on the strength of their capital on the markets, the volume of their flow of goods, and the number of global professional association conferences held in these cities, the World’s Most Global Cities survey, presented by Foreign Policy Magazine, A.T. Kearney and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, puts New York (United States) on the top spot (as it happened in the overall ratings), followed by Tokyo (Japan) and Paris (France). Kearney and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, keeps the same three cities on top 3, but London (United Kingdom) comes first this time, followed by Paris (France) and New York (United States).

Foreign Policy Magazine, the management consulting firm A.T. Kearney and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs teamed up to deliver rankings of Most Global Cities in the World. New York (United States) came out on top, followed by London (United Kingdom) and Paris (France).

What “global” means? A variety of metrics have been used for this concept, such as how well they fare in an increasingly competitive battle to attract and retain people, capital and ideas, and how simultaneous globalization and urbanization are affecting everything from international politics to corporate behavior. According to September 2008 data of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), lower unemployment rates in the United States can be found in Bismarck (North Dakota). The following US cities not very affected by the recession are Casper (Wyoming), Logan (Utah) and Sioux Falls (South Dakota). All of these cities registered some of the lowest unemployment rates in September 2008, at only 2.5%.

So if you are looking to find a job during these troubled times, you can avoid the largest cities and try finding something in smaller areas. Unemployment rates were higher in most metropolitan areas surveyed. More than 90% of cities have seen an increase in their unemployment rates. The national unemployment rate in September 2008 was 6%, up 1.5% from September 2007. Continue reading »
